The invention provides an alarm storm suppression method which comprises the flowing steps that a management system waits for an IED device to send an alarm, when the management system receives the alarm, an alarm counter looks up whether corresponding device information exists or not according to an alarm source device unique identifier, difference value of an initial report timestamp T0 of the device and the current system time is made, the alarm number of the device is inquired according to the device unique identifier, and one is added to the alarm number of the device; whether the alarm number surpasses the preset number N or not is judged, if yes, the device is considered to generate an alarm storm, and an alarm storm suppression processing is conducted to the device; the management system orders the IED device which generates the alarm storm to temporarily stop sending the alarm command, and eliminates the device from the alarm counter, and a reminder that the IED device generates the alarm storm is displayed on the system interface so that manual storm elimination is achieved. The alarm storm suppression method can avoid the influence on the timely transmission of other important messages due to impinge to the intelligent substation communication network by a large number of alarm messages, and help the operating personnel to quickly handle the failure.
